Walking Your Dog

Why is walking your dog good for the dog?

Walking your dog is great exercise for both you and your dog. Taking your dog for a walk allows him to get out of the house and see the world around him. It gives him a chance to go to the bathroom and to check out the other scents their neighbor dogs have left on previous walks.

Walks also cement the social bond between owner and dog. Dogs do best in an environment where they have known boundaries and manners. Walks allow you to reinforce your walking manners and other tricks.

Where are good places to take your dog for a walk?

There are lots of good places to take your dog for a walk should you be needing a place. You can start in your own neighborhood. This is the easiest as you just walk right out your front door and start walking.

If you’re looking for a change of scenery or some beautiful vistas, a local county or state park might be a great alternative. If you are looking for a farther flung destination, perhaps the beach or a mountain trail would be a good walking place for you and your dog.

Good dog walking equipment

You’ll need a good leash for walking your dog. You can either use a standard, simple leash or you can purchase a retractable leash. These leashes allow the dog to venture further away from you on a lead that retracts into a coil in your hand.

You could also opt to buy your dog a harness for your walks. This relieves the strain on the dogs neck that is typical when dogs are walked with standard leashes.

When you walk your dog, it’s important to also bring poop bags in case nature calls to your dog while you are out walking. It’s courteous to clean up after your pooch so that everyone can enjoy walking the paths.
